For those who don’t know who José Fernández, get to know who the man was. Get to know why Fernández’s life and death means so much to the Latino community, Major League Baseball, and the United States of America. Get to know why he had such a passion and zest for life, and was at the top of the game, his profession. It’s the reason he would be the person who would die the day before he was set to start a game for the Miami Marlins known by many as ” José Day.”
Fernández’s death puts a spotlight on the journey Latinos have made to pursue the dream of living in America, whether it’s for working a lower income job, working a middle income job, starting a business, or playing Major League Baseball MLB. Many have risked their lives in the middle of the vast waters separating Cuba and the United States. Many other Latinos have encountered other treacherous paths for freedom to be all they were created on this God’s green earth to be.
There is a countless amount of people who have lost their lives seeking a better life here. That should be applauded, not dehumanized.
As our borders have opened to Cuba and as we as a nation truly and fully embrace the Latino presence as a fully American and not a foreign one, let’s not forget the stories, the shoulders our brown brothers stand individually, as a group, and as Americans to fight through overwhelming odds just to be here. And then like José Fernández and many others not only thrive here, but WIN here.
It’s an inspiring story.
An American one.
RIP José Fernández.
